How Anxiety Could Limit You

When you’re stuck in the past or afraid of the future, anxiety can limit your capacity to reach your full potential. Anxiety can make you question your capacity or overwhelm you with racing thoughts. You may dwell on the negative. You may be lost in “what if” thinking. Your mind may be convinced that thinking about the worst case scenario and constantly preparing for a disaster is the only way to protect yourself. But this exhausting mindset not only fails to protect you, but it also often robs you from living your life fully.

How Counselling Can Help

Thoughts are not facts. They are stories we create for ourselves. Even though they are not facts, thoughts are powerful. Our thoughts influence how we feel and behave. The good news is, we can change our thoughts, even the thought patterns that you have had for years (or perhaps for generations that got passed on to you through parenting or family culture). We will help you gently challenge the thoughts that do not serve you while helping you practice self-awareness in a non-judgemental way. Some of those thoughts could be coming from your past experiences, we can create new narratives around those past memories. Some of the negative thoughts may be directed at yourself. With our time together, you will also learn to treat yourself better.

In addition to changing the thoughts that no longer serve you, we will also target some of your actions that get you in trouble and your behaviours that are avoidant in nature, which limit your life. During our time together, we will also create opportunities for you to practice the behaviours you would like to engage in instead. We will also work towards increasing your self-awareness around your bodily reactions and help you learn how to relax your nervous system and your muscles.
